The Best Defense
Before
Students are asked to brainstorm using a circle map all of the healthy habits they can think of. This will then lead into the reading of the article, The Best Defense.

During
Students will read the article and use the reading guide as a way to monitor comprehension as they read. This is a complex text so the teacher will probably need to read and model as students read. Students can read a section and think-pair-share as they answer the questions.

After
Students create a healthy habits poster promoting one healthy habit. (see example) In addition, students write on their circle map in a frame of reference the one healthy habit they are going to try and adopt.

Extension Activity
Before: We brainstormed a list of food and sorted them by color. I asked the students to think about the color of foods and we completed a KWL chart listed all they knew about the color of food and its relationship to nutrition. We then developed a list of what they wanted to know.
During: Students read the article and used the modified foldable/graphic organizer to organize information.
After: Students added to the KWL chart.
